MOGS Stalwarts

The MOGS has had amongst its members some of the finest practitioners of the art and science of medicine. They are beacons of excellence and are inspirations for generations to come. This section highlights the personalities and achievements of some of these individuals.

Dr. N. A. Purandare

The founder President of the MOGS (then BOGS) was a brilliant obstetrician whose tactful clinical manners and sympathetic care of women are legendary. Dr Nilkanth Anant Purandare was born in 1877 in a family of practitioners of Ayurveda and always showed an aptitude for medicine. He graduated from the Grant Medical College in 1896. He was the first Professor and Head of Department of the Seth G S Medical College and King Edward Memorial Hospital and later founded the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital.

His professional contributions based on his observations have become an important part of standard obstetric practice and teaching. He highlighted the importance of the anterior shoulder of the fetus in the progress of labor and secondly, he described a method for detecting cephalopelvic disproportion. His benevolence to the Society is illustrated in the provision of his private premises for the use of the Society at almost no charge. He received numerous honors, doctorates and fellowships. The stretch of road along Chowpatty that runs from Wilson College is named after him.

Dr. V. N. Shirodkar

Dr V N Shirodkar and his studies of the cervix put India firmly on the map of operative obstetrics and gynecology. In 1955, Dr V N Shirodkar described the cervical cerclage operation, a surgery which has stood the greatest test of all – time. He was astute enough to realize that his operation was not a panacea for all habitual abortions. He clearly laid out the conditions where the operation was most likely to be useful and humbly enough also where it would not work.

Dr V N Shirodkar, born in 1899 in Shiroda, Goa graduated from the Grant Medical College and went to UK to train further and obtained his FRCS in 1931. Upon his return he joined the JJ Group of Hospitals in 1935 as Honorary Obstetrician and Gynecologist. His career was a distinguished one and the Shirodkar’s Stitch was only a part of the story. He was an inimitable teacher and innovator. Amongst his many other surgical contributions, one counts the operations for prolapse repair, tuboplasty and creation of neovagina. Besides being a busy practitioner, he published widely and took an interest in social medicine. He was a member of the Shantilal Shah Committee on abortions and also established the Family Planning Association in India. He was honored by the Indian Government in 1971 with the Padma Vibhushan.

Dr. P. V. Mehta

Dr. Pravin Mehta is a pioneer of the Family Planning movement in the country. Dr. Mehta was born in 1934 in Calcutta and graduated from the Grant Medical College, Mumbai in 1960. His work in the medical field focused largely in the area of family planning. Besides conducting camps, Dr Mehta organized extensive orientation courses for paramedical workers, and in 1974, following a visit to the John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA for advanced training in cytology, he held the first of his many rural sterilization camps on a voluntary and charitable basis.

The Government adopted his method of “no exposure” for rural women and organized more camps across the state, and after 1980, he held sterilization and training camps for doctors, nurses and health workers in many different parts of the country. Dr. Mehta received the Dr. B C Roy National Award from then President Zail Singh in 1983. The Guinness Book of World Records includes his name as “Most Prolific Laparoscopic Surgeon for performing 4,60,000 operations in 1998”.
